to Jones Beach
Wantagh, a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, is known as "the gateway to Jones Beach." When Jones Beach State Park and the Wantagh causeway opened on August 4, 1929, as the first big project of Robert Moses's Long Island State Park Commission, the road to the ocean ran through here, and the Wantagh State Parkway still carries beach traffic from the Northern State all the way to Ocean Parkway.
The town has kept a piece of its older past too. The Victorian railroad station built in 1885 was saved by the Wantagh Preservation Society when the tracks were raised, and it now houses the Wantagh Museum; the station complex is on the National Register of Historic Places. Wantagh Park, a 111-acre county park on the bay, sits next to the parkway entrance.
