Middle Island takes its name from sitting roughly halfway between the eastern and western ends of Long Island. Its first Presbyterian church went up in 1766, and the painter Alonzo Chappel settled by Artist Lake in 1869, which is how the lake got its name. Today the hamlet has about 10,500 people in 8.3 square miles, the headwaters of the Carmans River, Artist Lake, Pine Lake and Spring Lake, and Cathedral Pines County Park next to the Prosser Pines Nature Preserve.
