Choosing a Garage Door Company on Long Island
A garage door is the heaviest moving thing in most houses, and the company you let work on it matters. This page is the checklist we would give a friend in Nassau or Suffolk County: what a good garage door company does, what to ask on the phone, and the warning signs that should make you hang up. Then you can hold us to the same list.
- Family-owned
- 27 years of experience
- Licensed & insured
- Written price before work
- 3-year repair warranty
What a good garage door company gives you
Whoever you call, these are the things that separate a solid garage door company from the ones homeowners end up complaining about. Next to each one is how we handle it at 1 Stop.
- A real person who knows doors answers the phone. At 1 Stop that is usually Abby, one of the owners. Many problems — a door in lock mode, a blocked safety sensor, a remote that lost its code — get solved on that call, at no charge.
- Published prices. You should know roughly what a broken spring or an off-track door costs before anyone comes out. Our repair price list, spring prices, opener prices and new door prices are all on this site.
- A written price before any work starts. No "we'll see when we're done". You approve the number first.
- A warranty in writing. Ours: 3 years on repairs, 5 years on spring replacement, 5–10 years on new door installation depending on the door, and 3 years on openers plus the manufacturer's warranty.
- The worn part is shown to you. If a cable is frayed or a roller is cracked, you should see it before it is replaced.
- The smallest fix that solves the problem. If an adjustment fixes the door, you shouldn't be sold a new opener.
- A safety test before the technician leaves. Door balance, auto-reverse and safety sensors are checked on every job.
- Honest hours. A company that promises "24/7, there in 30 minutes" to everyone is usually a call center. We tell you our real hours, below.
Questions to ask any garage door company before you hire them
- Who will actually come to my house? Your own technician, or whoever the booking service sends?
- What does the service call cost, and is it waived if I go ahead with the repair? (Ours: $39 only when no repair is done; free with any repair.)
- Will I get the price in writing before you start?
- How long is the warranty on this repair, and what does it cover?
- Do you work on my brand of door and opener?
- Do you replace both springs, and why? A good answer explains that springs wear together; a pair of torsion springs with us starts at $475.
- Is there an extra charge for evenings or Sundays? (Ours: a $75 surcharge for nights, Sundays and holidays.)
Red flags when you call a garage door company
- A very low service-call price that turns into a big bill. Ask what the repair itself will cost before anyone comes out.
- Pressure to replace the whole door when only a spring, a cable or a few rollers are worn.
- No written price, or a price that only appears after the work is done.
- A name on the website that doesn't match the truck, the invoice or the reviews.
- "Lifetime" or "100% guaranteed" with nothing in writing. A real warranty says how long and what it covers.
- Nobody can tell you who is coming. That usually means your job is being passed along.

Garage door company questions
Who is the best garage door company near me on Long Island?
The best garage door company for you is the one that answers its own phone, gives a written price before starting, explains its warranty in writing and has real reviews under the same name and number. Check those four things with any company you call — including us.
What should I ask a garage door company before I hire them?
Ask who will come out, what the service call costs, whether you get a written price before work starts, how long the warranty is on the repair, and whether they repair your brand. A good company answers all five on the first call without pressure.
Is a local garage door company better than a national chain or a booking website?
A local company that does its own work usually costs less and is easier to reach later, because there is no middleman taking a cut and the same people stand behind the warranty. Some booking websites pass your call to whichever installer is free, so ask who will actually come out.
Is 1 Stop Garage Door licensed and insured?
Yes. 1 Stop Garage Door is licensed and insured, and every job gets a written price before work starts and a written warranty after it is done.
How long has 1 Stop Garage Door been in business?
The family has 27 years of experience fixing and installing garage doors on Long Island.
Are you open on Saturday?
No. We are closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, and on Fridays we close 2 hours before Shabbat. We work Sunday through Friday, including evenings, and after Shabbat we help with urgent problems when a technician is available.
Do you repair every brand of garage door and opener?
Yes. We repair all garage door and opener brands, and we install LiftMaster and Genie openers.
What coupons and discounts does 1 Stop offer?
The service call is free with any repair (FREE911), springs are 10% off (SPRING10), new doors $250 off (NEWDOOR250), new openers $99 off (OPENER99) and tune-ups $20 off (TUNEUP20). Seniors and military get 10% off, openers included.
