From the 1960s and 70s

Medford started with the railroad: the Long Island Rail Road put a station here in 1843, in what was then open Pine Barrens, and a post office followed. In 1907 the railroad set up the Medford Prosperity Farm on 80 acres to show that crops could grow in the pine barrens soil. Today Medford is one of the larger hamlets in the Town of Brookhaven, with about 24,200 people in 10.8 square miles, served mostly by the Patchogue-Medford School District, with Route 112, Horseblock Road and the Long Island Expressway running through it.

Much of Medford was built out from the 1960s through the 1970s. Eagle Estates went up along Horseblock Road in 1963 and The Pines followed in the 1970s, and the typical home here dates to the mid-1970s. That means many garages still have doors, springs or openers from the original build, or from a replacement twenty or thirty years ago. The calls we get most: springs that finally break, cables fraying at the bottom brackets, and chain openers that are loud and slow.
