Town by Area
Brookhaven runs from Long Island Sound to the Atlantic barrier beaches. It is the largest town in New York State by land area, about 260 square miles, and with 485,773 people at the 2020 census it is the second most populous town in the state after Hempstead. The first land deed was signed in Setauket in 1655 and the town was incorporated in 1686. Today the town seat is in Farmingville, Stony Brook University is the largest employer, and Brookhaven National Laboratory sits on the former Camp Upton army site.
The town has eight incorporated villages, among them Patchogue, Port Jefferson, Bellport and Lake Grove, and roughly fifty hamlets. That means very different houses and very different garages: harbor-side homes on the North Shore, the large suburban hamlets of the middle of the island, newer communities like the townhouses in Yaphank, and bay-front neighborhoods on the South Shore.

Same-day service when a technician is available, Sunday through Friday including evenings. Closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays; after Shabbat we help with urgent problems when a technician is free.
Harbor and Bay
Homes
On the North Shore around Port Jefferson Harbor and the Sound, and on the South Shore near the Great South Bay and Moriches Bay, salt air reaches the garage. We see it as rust on torsion springs, cables, hinges and the bottom brackets, and as rollers that seize. Galvanized hardware, nylon rollers and a yearly tune-up with lubrication help those parts last.
The Middle
of the Island
In Centereach, Selden, Coram, Medford, Middle Island and Yaphank the wear comes from age and use: original springs on doors from the 1960s and 70s, cables fraying at the bottom, builder-grade parts on newer homes reaching the end of their cycles, and chain openers that are loud and slow. Most of these doors can still be repaired; we tell you plainly when a new door is the better money.
