Repair or Replace Your Garage Door? An Honest Guide

We make more money installing a new door than fixing an old one, so you might expect us to push replacement. We don't — most doors we see should be repaired. Here's how to tell which group yours is in.

A quick way to compare

SituationRepair fromNew door from
Broken torsion springs (pair)$475$1,550 single · $2,500 double
Snapped cables (pair)$195
One dented section$250
Door off track$175

Even a combination — springs plus cables plus rollers — usually costs well under the price of a new single door.

How we decide on your job

On every visit we look at the whole door, not just the part you called about. If replacement is the better deal, we'll tell you and give you both prices in writing. If repair is the better deal — which is most of the time — that's what we recommend.

Repair or replace questions

How long does a garage door last?

A steel door commonly lasts decades with normal maintenance; springs, rollers and openers are the parts that wear out and get replaced along the way.

Does a new garage door add value to a house?

A new door improves how the front of the house looks and how the garage works, which buyers notice. We don't quote resale-value percentages — they vary too much from house to house.

Can I get a price for both repair and a new door?

Yes. Ask on the visit and we'll write up both, so you can compare them side by side.
