Levittown is the place most people mean when they say "the first suburb." Levitt & Sons broke ground in 1947 on farmland in the Town of Hempstead and had about 17,000 houses standing by 1951, mostly for returning World War II veterans. To build that fast, the houses went up on concrete slabs without basements, after the Town of Hempstead changed its building code in 1947 to allow it, at a pace that reached about 30 houses a day.
For a garage door, the important detail is what happened next. The first Levitt houses came in two models, a Cape Cod and a ranch, and almost none of them had the garage you see today. Over seventy-plus years, owners added garages, extended them, turned them into rooms and built them back again. So on one Levittown block you can find a detached single-car garage, an attached garage with a low header, and a converted garage with a door that only opens for the lawn mower.
