Spring Safety - What Every Homeowner Must Know

Garage door springs are the single most dangerous component of the residential garage door system. Understanding what to do - and what never to do - can prevent serious injury.
Never Force the Opener
If the spring is broken and you activate the opener, the motor must lift the full door weight without spring assistance. This burns out the motor quickly and can cause the door to drop suddenly if the internal clutch fails. Disconnect the opener immediately and leave it disconnected until the spring is replaced.
Never Attempt DIY Replacement
Torsion springs store thousands of pounds of mechanical energy. The winding process requires specialized winding bars, precise turn counts, and specific training. A spring that releases suddenly can cause severe lacerations, broken bones, or death. Call a professional - every time.
Never Use a Visibly Damaged Spring
A gap in the coil, rust, stress fractures, or unusual grinding noise during operation all indicate a spring approaching failure. Stop using the door immediately and schedule a replacement. A spring that fails while the door is in motion can drop the door without warning.
How to Exit if the Spring is Broken
Pull the red emergency release cord hanging from the opener carriage to disconnect the opener. The door can then be lifted manually - it will be very heavy without the spring. Have another person assist. Open it only enough to exit, prop it safely, and call us immediately.
Test Your Door Balance Annually
Disconnect the opener and lift the door manually to the halfway position. Release it. A balanced door stays in place. A door that falls or rises on its own has a worn or incorrectly tensioned spring. Schedule an inspection before it fails completely.
Always Replace Both Springs
If one spring breaks, the other is at the same point in its lifecycle and will fail soon after. Replacing both at the same time eliminates dangerous imbalance, saves you a second service call, and ensures smooth symmetric operation for years.
Biennial Spring Inspection Program
We recommend a full spring and lift system inspection every two years for all Long Island homeowners. Long Island's humidity and extreme temperature swings between summer and winter accelerate wear on all garage door hardware. A biennial inspection identifies problems before they become emergencies - and before a routine inspection becomes an emergency repair.
Spring Tension Check
We verify that spring tension matches your door's current weight. Doors gain weight over time as insulation absorbs moisture or panels are replaced. A spring set for a 130 lb door that now weighs 150 lbs is dangerously under-tensioned.
Coil Condition Inspection
Every coil is inspected for rust, stress fractures, uneven spacing, and metal fatigue - warning signs that are invisible during normal operation but indicate imminent failure.
Cable & Pulley Check
Cables inspected for fraying, kinking, rust, and improper drum winding. Pulleys checked for bearing wear, sheave groove condition, and correct cable seating in the groove.
Balance Test
We disconnect the opener and test door balance at multiple points in the travel range. An unbalanced door is the leading cause of premature spring failure and opener motor burnout.
Hardware Lubrication
We lubricate spring coils, cable drums, roller stems, and hinges with professional-grade garage door lubricant - never WD-40, which strips the protective coating from spring wire and accelerates rust and corrosion.
Remaining Life Assessment
Based on coil condition, original cycle rating, and usage patterns, we give you a straight assessment of how much life remains - no sales pressure, no unnecessary replacements recommended.
