Garage Door Cables, Drums & Spring Hardware
A spring never works alone. Cables, drums, pulleys, brackets and bearings carry the same load, and when a spring breaks they take the hit too. This is what each part does and what we check before we leave.

Spring-Related Components We Service
A spring failure puts stress on every connected component in the lift system. When we replace springs, we inspect, service, and replace every related component needed for safe and balanced operation. We never replace just the spring and leave worn hardware behind.
Lift Cables (LC)

Steel lift cables connect the bottom bracket at the base of each door panel to the cable drum on the torsion shaft. When a spring breaks, the sudden release of tension frequently damages or snaps the cables simultaneously.
We replace cables with correctly sized, properly wound galvanized steel cable - matched to your door's weight and track configuration. We never reuse frayed, kinked, or rusted cables.
- Matched by length and cable diameter to door and drum specifications
- Must be correctly wound onto the drum groove - improper winding causes premature fraying
- Replaced in pairs - always, regardless of apparent condition of the second cable
- Loop ends inspected for fraying at the bottom bracket connection
Cable Pulleys (CP) & Pulley Brackets (PL)

Pulleys are used specifically in extension spring systems. The lift cable runs from the bottom bracket, up and over a pulley mounted near the rear of the horizontal track, then connects to the extension spring. The pulley changes the direction of the cable's pull, allowing the spring to lift the door efficiently.
Worn or seized pulleys cause the cable to slip, fray prematurely, and wear the cable unevenly. A failed pulley can cause the cable to jump off track and the door to drop suddenly without warning.
- 2-inch and 3-inch pulley sizes for different door track configurations
- Steel sheave with sealed ball bearing - smooth operation, no lubrication required
- Pulley bracket (PL) inspected and replaced if bent, cracked, or loose
- Cable must sit centered in sheave groove - side loading accelerates wear
- S-hooks and rear anchor points inspected and replaced if deformed
Cable Drums (CD)
Cable drums sit at each end of the torsion spring shaft and guide the lift cable through the full range of door travel. The cable winds onto drum grooves as the door closes and unwinds as it opens.
Worn drum grooves cause the cable to stack unevenly, creating a crooked door, accelerated cable wear, and excessive load on the spring and opener. We inspect drum groove depth and condition on every job.
- Standard radius drums - most Long Island residential doors
- High-lift drums - doors with additional vertical track clearance
- Must be matched to cable diameter and track radius specification
- Set screws inspected and torqued to manufacturer specification
- Drums replaced when grooves show measurable wear
Safety Cables (SC)
Safety cables are the single most important safety component in an extension spring system - and the most frequently missing one on older Long Island homes.
A safety cable runs through the center of each extension spring from the front bracket to the rear anchor point. When a spring breaks, the safety cable contains it within its coils, preventing the spring from becoming a high-speed projectile that travels across the garage.
- Many homes built before 1990 have no safety cables - we install them on every visit
- Must be correct length and diameter - too long is as dangerous as missing
- Attached at front to the spring anchor bracket with appropriate hardware
- Attached at rear to the rear track hanger or dedicated S-hook anchor point
Spring Conversion Kit
Some older Long Island homes were built with extension spring systems that are no longer practical to maintain safely - or that lack adequate headroom for proper safety cable installation. In these cases, we recommend and install a full spring conversion kit that replaces the entire extension spring system with a torsion spring setup.
The conversion kit includes new torsion hardware, lift cables, drums, center and end bearing plates, and all mounting components. The result is a dramatically safer, more balanced, and longer-lasting system.
- Eliminates the flying spring hazard entirely - torsion springs cannot become projectiles
- Smoother, more balanced operation throughout the full range of door travel
- 25,000+ cycle life with high-cycle torsion springs vs approximately 10,000 cycles for standard extension springs
- Better suited for heavier insulated doors common in newer Long Island construction
- Kit includes: torsion shaft, spring, drums, cables, center bearing plate (CBP), end bearing plates (EBP)
Bottom Brackets (BB)
The bottom bracket sits at the base of each door panel side and is the attachment point for the lift cable. It carries the full weight of the door through the cable during every single cycle - making it one of the highest-stress components in the entire system.
Cracked, bent, or worn bottom brackets are a leading cause of cable failure and sudden door drops. We inspect every bottom bracket during spring service and replace immediately if any damage or deformation is found.
- Available in standard residential and commercial-grade heavy duty
- Must be matched to cable diameter and door weight rating
- Roller stem and bottom roller inspected simultaneously
- All mounting bolts torqued to specification before leaving
Torsion Shaft & Bearing Plates (CBP / EBP)
The steel torsion shaft runs the full width of the garage door opening and carries the torsion spring, cable drums, and all associated hardware. A bent or damaged shaft - common after vehicle impact or improper prior repairs - must be replaced before any spring work can be completed safely.
- Center bearing plate (CBP) - supports the shaft at mid-span, prevents deflection under load
- End bearing plates (EBP) - support the shaft at each end wall anchor point
- All bearings inspected for wear, lubricated or replaced as needed
- Shaft checked for straightness before spring installation begins
Opener Force Calibration
After every spring replacement, we disconnect and recalibrate the garage door opener's force settings and travel limits. This step is non-negotiable - we never skip it to save time.
An opener calibrated for a broken or worn spring applies excessive force with a new spring installed. This accelerates wear on opener gears, the new spring, and all related hardware. It can also compromise the door's auto-reverse safety function.
- Up-force and down-force settings adjusted to match new spring tension
- Travel limits verified and set correctly in both directions
- Auto-reverse safety test performed with 2x4 obstruction test
- All remotes, keypads, and vehicle HomeLink systems tested after calibration
