Torsion & Extension Garage Door Springs

Every garage door spring on a Long Island home is either a torsion spring above the door or a pair of extension springs beside the tracks. Here is how each type works, how we size it, and how to read the color on an extension spring.

All Types of Garage Door Springs

We are specialists in every type of garage door spring system used on Long Island homes and commercial properties. Every door is different - the correct spring depends on door weight, width, height, track configuration, and headroom. We identify and install the exact right spring before ordering or installing anything.

Spring Types & Components - Quick Reference

Torsion Springs (TS / DTS / ETS / TMS)

The most common spring system on Long Island. Torsion springs mount horizontally above the garage door opening on a steel shaft. When the door closes, the spring winds and stores energy. When opened, it unwinds and lifts the door smoothly and safely.

Torsion springs are measured by wire diameter, inside diameter, and length. An incorrectly sized spring creates dangerous imbalance and fails prematurely. We measure everything before ordering.

Extension Springs (ES / OL / DL / CE)

Extension springs mount along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch as the door closes and release energy as it opens. Very common in older Long Island homes and garages with lower ceiling clearance throughout Nassau County.

Extension springs are color-coded by weight capacity. Installing the wrong color or weight creates dangerous imbalance that leads to premature failure and potential injury. We always verify door weight before selecting the spring.

Critical safety requirement: Every extension spring system must include safety cables (SC) running through the spring coils. Without them, a broken spring becomes a dangerous projectile. We install safety cables on every extension spring job - no exceptions, no shortcuts.

How We Select the Right Spring

Spring selection is a precise engineering calculation - not a guess or an approximation. We measure every variable before ordering or installing anything on your Long Island home.

A spring that is even slightly wrong for your door will fail prematurely and create unsafe operating conditions. We get it right the first time - every time.

Extension Spring Color Chart

Extension springs are color-coded by the weight of door they are designed to lift. Matching the correct spring to your door's exact weight is critical for safe and balanced operation. We weigh your door before selecting and installing any extension spring - we never guess.

Color Door Weight Typical Door Size Springs Required
Light Blue90 LB (41 kg)8x7 ft / 9x7 ft2 Springs
Tan100 LB (45 kg)8x7 ft / 9x7 ft2 Springs
White110 LB (50 kg)8x7 / 9x7 / 16x7 ft2 Springs
Green120 LB (54 kg)8x7 / 9x7 / 16x7 ft2 Springs
Yellow130 LB (59 kg)8x7 / 9x7 / 16x7 ft2 Springs
Dark Blue140 LB (64 kg)16x7 ft2 Springs
Red150 LB (68 kg)16x7 ft2 Springs
Brown160 LB (73 kg)16x7 ft2 Springs
Orange170 LB (77 kg)16x7 ft2 Springs
Gold180 LB (82 kg)16x7 ft2 Springs

Always replace extension springs in pairs. Replacing only one creates dangerous imbalance and the second spring will fail shortly after. Color codes follow the DASMA chart (Technical Data Sheet 171); a color only narrows it down, so we still weigh the door and measure the spring.
