Massapequa sits on the South Shore in the Town of Oyster Bay, with Massapequa Park, its incorporated village, in the middle. Two Long Island Rail Road stations on the Babylon Branch, Massapequa and Massapequa Park, carry commuters west, and Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road cut across the whole area from east to west. The Massapequa Preserve, about 423 acres of woods, ponds and trail along Massapequa Creek, runs north to south through the middle of it.
The name goes back a long way: in 1658 the Massapequa sachem Tackapausha deeded meadowland here to settlers from Oyster Bay, and his name is still on the Tackapausha Museum and Preserve just west in Seaford.
South of Merrick Road, many houses back onto canals that open to South Oyster Bay. Those streets flooded in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and salt air still reaches the garages there every day: springs, cables, hinges and bottom brackets rust faster than they do a mile north. North of Sunrise Highway the houses are mostly post-war ranches, capes and split-levels with attached one- and two-car garages, and the usual problems are worn springs and tired openers rather than rust.
