East Meadow is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, and its name goes back to the open grassland of the Hempstead Plains that once covered this part of the island. The Meadow Brook that gave the area its name is now under the Meadowbrook Parkway, which runs along the west side of the hamlet.
Two landmarks define it. Eisenhower Park, about 930 acres of golf courses, ball fields and lawns, fills the northern edge. The tower of Nassau University Medical Center, one of the tallest buildings in the county, stands over Hempstead Turnpike, and a lot of East Meadow residents work there or at other hospitals on rotating shifts.
Most homes here went up in the 1950s and early 1960s: ranches, capes and split-levels on regular blocks, nearly all with an attached garage. Many of those garages still have their original framing and tracks, with doors and openers that have been replaced once or twice since.
