A View Over
the Hempstead Plains

Plainview is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, and its history goes back to 1648, when a Welsh settler named Robert Williams bought land here. The name comes from the view its hills once gave over the open Hempstead Plains; one of those hills, Manetto Hill, gave the area its earlier name and is remembered today in Manetto Hill Road and the Manetto Hills preserve.

After World War II, farmland turned into one of the busiest suburbs on the island, crossed today by the Long Island Expressway, the Northern State Parkway and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. Plainview shares its school district, library, fire department and water district with neighboring Old Bethpage, home of the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a 19th-century village museum.

For garage doors, Plainview means bigger doors. Many homes here are split-levels, high ranches and colonials with two-car garages, so 16-foot doors on a pair of torsion springs are the norm. Those doors are heavy, especially once they are insulated, and when a spring breaks or the balance drifts, the opener feels it first.

What We See in Plainview

16-foot two-car doors - heavy doors that need a matched pair of springs sized to the real door weight.
Openers working too hard - a door out of balance strips gears and burns out motors; balance first, opener second.
Insulated door upgrades - a new insulated door weighs more than the old one, so springs must be re-sized.
Colonials with rooms over the garage - quiet belt-drive or wall-mount openers make a difference.
Commuters on the LIE - early starts mean a door that has to work at 6 AM, every day.

Springs Sized for
Two-Car Doors

A 16-foot door usually runs on two torsion springs that carry well over a hundred pounds between them. We weigh the door, fit springs to that weight, replace both at once and set the balance so the opener only has to guide the door. When the door is used many times a day, high-cycle springs are worth the small difference.

Garage Door Openers in Plainview

The Right Opener
for a Heavy Door

An opener should never be the thing lifting a heavy door. Once the springs are balanced, a 1/2 HP-class belt drive handles most two-car doors quietly; for rooms over the garage, a wall-mount opener takes the motor off the ceiling. Openers carry our 3-year warranty plus the manufacturer's.

New Garage Doors in Plainview

Two-Car Doors for
Plainview Homes

Insulated steel double doors are the most popular choice on Plainview split-levels and colonials, often in a carriage-house design with window inserts. When you go from an uninsulated door to an insulated one, the springs have to be re-sized for the new weight; that is part of every installation we do.

Single steel doors start at $1,550 and double doors at $2,500, and NEWDOOR250 takes $250 off.

How much does garage door repair cost in Plainview, NY?
Repairs start at $75. A pair of torsion springs for a two-car door starts at $475, high-cycle springs at $525 and a balance adjustment at $125. Weekday visits have no service call, and you approve the price in writing first.
Why does my two-car garage door opener struggle to lift the door?
Usually the springs are worn or the door is out of balance, so the opener is lifting weight the springs should carry. A balance adjustment starts at $125; if a spring is broken, a pair starts at $475.
Do I need new springs if I install an insulated garage door?
Yes. An insulated door is heavier, so the springs have to be sized to the new weight. When we install a door, the springs are always matched to it.
Do you serve Old Bethpage too?
Yes. We cover Plainview (11803) and Old Bethpage, including Manetto Hill and the streets near the Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
When can you come to Plainview?
Appointments Sunday–Thursday 7 AM–7 PM and Friday until 2 hours before Shabbat; closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Weekday visits have no service call; Sundays have a $39 service call, and after-hours (after 7 PM) and holiday visits $69.
