Hicksville is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, and it exists because of the railroad. It is named after Valentine Hicks, a Quaker merchant who later became president of the Long Island Rail Road; he bought land here in 1834, and a station opened in 1837 as the line pushed east. Today Hicksville station, where the Port Jefferson Branch splits from the main line toward Ronkonkoma, is one of the busiest on the whole railroad.
About 44,000 people live in Hicksville, according to the 2020 census, which makes it one of the largest communities in Nassau County.
