That Became a Town
Bellmore is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead whose roots go back to farming and fishing settlements of the 1600s; an older name for the area was New Bridge. The name Bellmore came with the railroad: the South Side Railroad laid its tracks through here in the late 1860s and opened Bellmore station in 1869. In the 1920s the busy station turned Bellmore into a commuter town, and today the elevated station, rebuilt in 1975, still sits in the middle of it on the Babylon Branch.
The houses tell that story. Near the station and Bedford Avenue you find older homes from the first commuter boom; north of Sunrise Highway and in North Bellmore, the streets fill with post-war ranches, capes and split-levels, most with an attached garage. South of Merrick Road the blocks run down to canals off the bay, where the houses are closer to salt water than most people realize.
Each part of town wears a garage door differently. Inland, it is mostly spring and opener wear from years of daily use. On the canal streets, salt air rusts springs, cables and bottom brackets faster, and doors that sat in storm water often have a swollen or rusted bottom section.
