Noisy Garage Door? What Each Sound Means
Garage doors get louder slowly, so most people only notice when a guest mentions it. Each kind of noise points to a different part — and one of them means stop using the door.

| Sound | Usual cause | Starting at |
|---|---|---|
| Squeaking or squealing | Dry hinges, rollers and springs | $125 tune-up |
| Grinding or scraping | Worn steel rollers or bent track | $175 roller set |
| Rattling or clanking | Loose hinges and bolts, or a chain drive | $45 per hinge |
| Grinding from the opener head | Worn drive gear | $225 gear kit |
| Popping as the door moves | Springs or a hinge under strain | $125 balance |
| One loud bang | Broken spring | $275 one spring |
What you can do yourself
- Lubricate the hinges, roller bearings and torsion spring with a garage-door lubricant (a light silicone or lithium spray), twice a year.
- Don't grease the tracks. Tracks should be clean, not oily; grease collects dirt and makes rollers skid.
- Tighten loose hinge and track bolts with the door closed — but never touch the bottom brackets, which are under spring tension.
Fixes that make the biggest difference
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings. Replacing old steel rollers is the single biggest noise improvement on most doors. A full set starts at $175.
A belt drive opener. If the noise is the opener itself and there's a bedroom above, a belt drive replaces the chain rattle with a hum. Belt openers start at $550 installed.
A tune-up. Lubrication, tightening, balance and an opener check — $125.
Noisy garage door questions
Is WD-40 good for a garage door?
Regular WD-40 is a cleaner, not a lasting lubricant, so the squeak comes back quickly. Use a lubricant made for garage doors on hinges, rollers and springs.
Why does my garage door shake when it opens?
Worn rollers, a loose track or an unbalanced door make it shake. If it also lifts unevenly or jerks, have the springs and cables checked.
Will new rollers make my door quieter?
Usually yes — nylon rollers with sealed bearings are much quieter than worn steel rollers, especially on older doors.
