It's unsettling to come home and find the garage open when you know you closed it. There's always a cause, and most of them are cheap to fix — but it's worth fixing quickly, because an open garage is an open door into the house.

Work through it in this order
1. Check every remote. A remote pressed against something in a car console or a bag can send signals all day. Take the batteries out of spares.
2. Think about old remotes. If you bought the house, a previous owner, contractor or neighbor may still have one that works.
3. Look at the wall control and its wire. A damaged wire — chewed, stapled through or wet — can short and send a "go" signal.
4. Clear and reprogram. Erasing the opener's memory and reprogramming only the remotes you own stops every remote you don't know about.
5. Still happening? The logic board or receiver may be failing and needs a technician.

Can a neighbor's remote open my garage door?
With modern rolling-code openers it's very unlikely; with very old fixed-code openers it can happen. If your opener is old enough that the remote has small switches inside, it's time to replace it.
Why does my garage door close by itself after I open it?
Some openers have a timer-to-close feature that closes the door after a set time. If it's on, it can be turned off from the wall control or the app.
Should I worry about security if my door opened on its own?
