LiftMaster 8165W — the dependable chain drive
A chain drive is the simplest and toughest kind of opener. It's louder than a belt, which doesn't matter in a detached garage or one with no rooms nearby. The 8165W still gives you phone control through the app. Battery backup can be added for $119.
Best for: detached garages, garages away from bedrooms, and anyone who wants Wi-Fi for the least money.
LiftMaster 84505R — quiet belt drive with backup power
A steel-reinforced belt instead of a chain makes this opener quiet enough for a garage under a bedroom. Battery backup is built in, so the door still opens when a storm knocks out the power.
Best for: attached garages with living space above or beside them — the opener we recommend most for attached garages.
Genie StealthDrive 750 — a quiet Genie belt drive
The Genie alternative for homeowners who prefer the brand or already have Genie remotes and keypads.
Best for: homeowners who want a quiet belt drive and prefer to stay with Genie remotes and keypads. Ask us which smart and backup options come with the current version.
LiftMaster 87504-267 — belt drive with a built-in camera
Everything the 84505R does, plus a camera in the opener so you can see inside the garage from the app — handy for package deliveries and checking that the car or the kids' bikes are in.
Best for: families who want to see the garage, not just open it.
LiftMaster 8500W / 98022 — wall-mount, no rail on the ceiling
Instead of hanging from the ceiling, a wall-mount opener sits on the wall beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly. The whole ceiling stays free.
Best for: low ceilings, garages with storage racks or a lift, high-lift tracks, and anyone who wants the quietest setup. It needs a torsion spring system — we check before quoting.

Opener model questions
Which of these openers is the quietest?
The wall-mount 8500W/98022 is the quietest because nothing runs along the ceiling; of the ceiling-mounted models, the belt drives (84505R, 87504-267 and Genie StealthDrive 750) are much quieter than the 8165W chain drive.
Do I need a special opener for an 8-foot-tall door?
A standard opener needs an 8-foot rail extension for an 8-foot-tall door, from $225. We measure and include it in the written price if you need it.
Can I keep my old remotes with a new opener?
Sometimes. If your remotes use the same security system as the new opener, we program them; if not, new remotes start at $89.
