Garage Door Opener Light Blinking — What It Means

When the opener light or the light on the motor head starts flashing, the opener is telling you something specific. On most openers it's one of three things, and one of them is far more common than the others.

The three usual reasons

1. Safety sensors. On many LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, the lights flash about ten times when you try to close and the sensors don't see each other. Look at the two small sensors low on the door frame: both lights should be steady. A dim, blinking or dark light means misalignment, dirt or a damaged wire.

2. Lock mode. Many wall controls have a lock feature that blocks remotes. Some show it with a blinking light on the wall control itself. Turn the lock off and try the remote again.

3. A diagnostic code. Newer openers flash a pattern — a number of blinks, sometimes with arrows on the motor head — that points to a part: sensors, the travel limits, or the motor and logic board. The code chart is usually printed on a label inside the light cover.

What you can try safely

1. Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft cloth.

2. Make sure nothing is between the sensors.

3. Gently nudge the sensor brackets so the two face each other until both lights are steady.

4. Unplug the opener for a minute and plug it back in.

If the light still flashes, or the code points to the motor or board, it's time for a technician.

Blinking light questions

Why does the light on my wall control keep flashing?

On many wall controls a flashing light means the lock feature is on, or that the opener lost communication with the wall control. Turning the lock off is the first thing to try.

Can a blinking opener still open the door?

Usually it opens but refuses to close, because the safety system only blocks closing. Holding the wall button down closes most doors in an emergency — only while watching it.

Do LED bulbs cause opener problems?

Some LED bulbs interfere with the opener's radio and shorten remote range. If remotes got worse after changing the bulbs, try a bulb labeled for garage door openers.
